Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first generic version of Viagra® to be marketed under the brand name Sildenafil in the United States. Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra®, is the only FDA-approved generic drug to treat erectile dysfunction.

Viagra® is the first generic medicine to be marketed under the brand name Sildenafil, which is the active ingredient in Viagra®. It was first approved by the FDA in November 2012 and has been available in more than 1,500 pharmacies worldwide since it was approved in 1998. The first generic approved by the FDA was marketed under the brand name Revatio®, which was approved in 2003.
In February 2013, FDA approval of the second-generation version of Viagra® was granted, with an initial US generic equivalent of Viagra® being launched. In January 2014, approval of the third-generation version of Viagra® was granted, with a US generic equivalent of Viagra® being launched.
Sildenafil is the generic name for the generic version of Viagra®, and is available in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, with the exception of Canada, which requires that all generics be manufactured by Pfizer Canada Limited.
